Before Rhinoplasty Surgery

Preoperative Rhinoplasty Instructions

Three weeks before surgery:

  • Laboratory and eye examinations (if they are required) must be done.  A requisition will be given to you during your preoperative appointment.  If you are having your preoperative testing at a lab other than the one we recommend, you are responsible for having the written results of this testing arrive at our office one full week before surgery (our fax number is 336-716-9440).
  • Facelift/Brow lift patients…if you are planning to have a haircut, perm, or color your hair, please do so 2 weeks before surgery or 3 weeks after surgery.  You may choose to leave your hair a little longer around your ears initially to camouflage incision sites.
  • Surgical fee is due.

Two weeks before surgery:

  • Do not take any products containing aspirin, ibuprofen (i.e. Advil, Motrin), or Vitamin E.  Check with your pharmacist when taking any over-the-counter medications.  Many pain relievers and cold and sinus medications contain aspirin or ibuprofen.  Tylenol is OK.
  • Refrain from all nicotine products, including cigarettes, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, or "the patch".  Nicotine interferes with healthy circulation and may affect the result of your surgery.  It also places you at higher risk of complication when receiving anesthesia.
  • Start taking 1000 mg of Vitamin C three times per day.  Vitamin C helps with healing.
  • If your destination after surgery is more than 30 minutes from Dr. Goldman's office (including traffic), you must make arrangements to stay in a hotel on the night following surgery.  A list of hotels can be obtained from any staff member.

One week before surgery:

  • Do not drink alcohol for 1 week before or after surgery.
  • Narcotic pain medication and/or anesthesia may cause constipation.  If you have problems with constipation, you should increase fiber in your diet, use Metamucil and increase fluids.  You may wish to start stool softeners (docusate sodium OTC) 3-4 days before surgery and 1-2 weeks after surgery as needed.

Three days before surgery:

  • Start Arnica; 2 pillules (pills) 3 times a day.  Do not take any pillules the day of surgery.
  • For 2 days after surgery take 2 pillules 3 times a day.

Day before surgery:

  • Call 336-716-4000 to obtain your arrival time for the day of surgery.
  • DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT (this includes water and chewing gum).  SURGERY MAY BE CANCELLED IF THIS IS NOT FOLLOWED.  A fasting state is required in order to receive sedation for surgery.

Day of surgery:

  • You may shower and shampoo.  Do not wear makeup, hair sprays or gels, or nail polish (you may leave acrylic nails on).
  • Avoid clothing that must be pulled over the head.
  • Do not wear jewelry or bring valuables to surgery.
  • Dentures, if worn, should be left in place.
