When you come in for a consultation we try to image your nose and change the shape of the nose on the computer. Here is an example of how the nose has changed shape during our consultation where we have widened it and where we have narrowed it. If you compare it to the actual postop you can see that we try to be as accurate as we can in what we are trying to accomplish; however, we don't use this to promise an outcome but rather to make sure that we understand what each individual patient wants since it can be very unique and individual. It is one thing to express what you want with words and it is another to see it and make changes with us on the computer.
When you come in for your consultation, be prepared to answer questions about what YOU want to change about YOUR nose. Do you care about only the shape of your nose or are you most interested in improving the breathing? If you want to change the shape of your nose, what specifically do YOU want changed? Do you want to make the tip smaller or bigger? Do you want to take the bump down or widen it?
Another question to be prepared to answer is what you DON'T want your nose to look like. I encourage all of my patients to bring in photos of noses that they don't like to make sure that we can avoid those characteristics as best possible. I ask my patients to do go to the Web and find photos of noses they don't like so that they can express to me what it is that they wish to avoid.
If you have had previous surgery it is very important for us to know what has been done and most likely we will ask you to obtain a copy of the operative reports to help us in our planning.
At your consultation we will ask you medical questions to see if you are a safe candidate for surgery to maximize your ability to have a healthy positive outcome. If there are medical issues that we need to know about please help us to understand them so that we may best take care of you. Following our discussion and information regarding your health, we will take photos of your nose and look together on the computer imaging program.
Here is an example of some imaging we did with the patient before surgery. You can see the changes that we have made to her tip and to the bump on her nose, where we have narrowed it or lowered it. You can see the changes that we have made also after surgery. In this case we were relatively accurate at predicting the outcome; however, I like to make sure that my patients understand that our computer imaging is a tool that we use to help understand what you like and what you don't like about your nose so that we can best accommodate you rather than as a promise of what to expect from surgical outcomes. Still, our patients find it very useful as do we, in preparing you best to obtain what YOU want to accomplish from surgery.
